Day 13: Describe one underappreciated book everyone should read
Goethe’s Conversations with German Refugees (Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten) is a favorite book, and one that should be better known and widely read. It contains the short story, Fairy Tale (Das Märchen) or The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily, which is a perfect example of the form. It is still read today, but removed from its context it is confusing and puzzling. By placing this short tale back into its original frame story and looking back at its historic context, the meaning becomes clear. It is a model for open and democratic communication and invites participation and creativity. It is a form of discourse that encourages new ideas and alternative approaches. It provides a perfect antidote to our divisive and closed style of communication that is all too prevalent today.
This post from a year ago places it in context and provides some direction for reading and interpreting this enigmatic work.
