Reactions to Autobiographical Reading List

In reflecting on yesterday’s llist I have noticed that importance and influence is not always direct or positive or even related to the manifest content of the book. Mahfouz’s Children of the Alley, while an excellent and interesting book, had greater influence because it became a focal point for dramatic changes about how I lived and thought about my life. It has less to do with what the book had to say and more to do with its place in the context of my life.
