Athenian styles of leadership

Nicias was a cautious, but I would not say a poor leader. When you’re up against the highly disciplined Spartan army it pays to be careful. Washington was also a cautious general, but we think very highly of his abilities. They were appropriate to the circumstances. In the same way Nicias abilities helped him to avoid disaster during the Archidamian War. But the Sicilian expedition called for a very different kind of leadership.

I think it would be better to serve under Nicias than Alcibiades. With Nicias I feel like you would have a much better chance of survival. Under Alcibiades I fear that you would all too often end up, well, like Alcibiades.
