What is going on?

“It reminds me of the daily mirror’s headline after the 04 election: How can 59 million Americans be so dumb? … What is going on in this country? What kind of country is this? Please help me understand!”

There are no doubt many factors but these stand out for me:

1) Civil rights, especially the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, brought an end to the dominance of the Southern Democratic party.

2) Commercially motivated organizations provide the great majority of our information. Most critically, the news media is owned by a few really wealthy groups and has no serious oversight or regulation.

3) Suburban sprawl led to the loss of public spaces, neighborhoods and local community bonds which in turn led to a rise in churches (especially the suburban megachurch) as the center of community and as a place of togetherness and social activity.

4) These last two work together to cultivate and reinforce a widespread belief that:
a) Our political problems are moral and not social or economic.
b) The literal truth of the Bible is the ultimate authority on all matters of morals, science and politics.
c) The role of government is to cultivate moral virtue not to interrupt the natural economic functions of the market.
