Thinking Historically

Sun Sep 7 22:10:45 2008
It is easy to agree that historians, politicians and the press should not mislead the public on issues. Perhaps too easy. If the public was not so credulous about accepting information then it would not be as profitable or tempting for those who want to mislead. I would argue that everyone in a democracy should be obligated to “think historically.” The alternative is to let other people do our thinking for us. And that makes us far too tempting and easy a target. If we are proud of our democracy we should do our homework to strengthen and preserve it. Thinking historically should not be reserved for academic history seminars but should be the groundwork of any high school civics class.
