A Few Books on Gnosticism

Sun Jul 27 22:42:16 2008
I met Elaine Pagels at a conference. Her book, The Gnostic Gospels was an excellent and the most accessible introduction at the time. Everyone was shocked that it became a surprise bestseller.

When I was studying Gnosticism the two classics were The Gnostic Religion by Hans Jonas and Die Gnosis by Kurt Rudolph. I have heard that the Rudolph book has been subsequently translated into English, but I have not seen the translation. I also think there are some books that take into consideration more recent scholarship but cannot recall them.

  1. Have any thoughts on Karen King’s What is Gnosticism?
