There are three eras in every document

I think every document has at least three major contexts: the context of the event, the context of the writer, and the context of the reader. I think all three of them are important and can provide different perspectives. I would argue that it is entirely acceptable, and even critical, to evaluate the past in terms of the present—that is part of how we define ourselves. The danger comes from thinking that is the correct and only way, rather than one of several ways to look at past events.
