War as Ritual

War is a ritualized form of human behavior. When we share expectations about the performance of the ritual, it can be resolved through organized and contained violence. When we have disagreement about the conduct of war the violence tends to spread out of control. As you mention the most violent conflicts are often fought across cultural and religious boundaries. On the other hand, Civil wars for some reason tend to extreme violence. Perhaps because highly conflicting cultures are contained within and artificial or out-dated political structure.
