The War as Chess Anachronism

“The European concept up until then [the Seventeenth century] was one where war was contained to the battlefield and had rules that limited casualties to those immediate participants.”

Where do people get these ideas from? Have we no sense of history? The French Wars of Religion, the Spanish suppression of the Dutch Revolt, Cortez in Mexico, Pizarro in Peru and the Thirty Years War were all immediately preceding or contemporary with that era but, in my understanding, they were especially hard on civilian and non-combatant populations.
