American Mythos of War

Russell Weigley’s The American Way of War (1973), does not describe the American way or practice of war so much as an American mythos of war. This mythos is based upon the Civil War and World War II, which in retrospect have perfect moral clarity—the fight against slavery, fascism and the holocaust. The problem comes when our ideal expectations of moral clarity, overwhelming firepower and total victory do not match the reality of the actual practice of war.
