Antoine Brumel
Mar 28, 2007
Antoine Brumel’s style changed over the course of his life, but was still typical of the changing musical styles of the time. If anything might sound atonal to our ears I would suspect it would be his earlier works, written in a kind of rhythmic, pre-harmonic polyphony. If is sounded strange at the time it would only be because it was written in the older Burgundian style. His later works were written in an early form of what would eventually evolve into the Western tonal harmonic system.
The music of Brumel is even more unusual than Ockeghem and sounds quite atonal even by modern standards. I’m sure it was considered far-out in his day.

I’m quite curious about this. Where you thinking of any works in particular? Your description sounds fascinating, but is different from anything I remember hearing.
