I thought this was a very good Faust broadcast from the Met this afternoon. Ruth Ann Swenson sounded great. Not the same as she did 10 years ago, her voice is darker and less sweet, which is very well suited to this role. I enjoyed Vargas and Abdrasakov as well. It was not a very dramatic performance, but I don’t really think of Gounod’s Faust as a very dramatic work. It is certainly not Berlioz.
All in all a good day. I am not at all disappointed and looking forward to hearing her sing the upcoming Handel opera.
