Queen of the Night

In my experience the Russian soprano Larissa Yudina is the quintessential Queen of the Night. Her version is powerful, accurate and frightening. She dominates the stage with her presence. Her delivery is strong, but she has an exquisitely beautiful tone that you almost never hear in big voices.
With many sopranos in this role you wonder how close they will come to their high note or they seem charming or bird-like with their light voices. With Larissa you have no doubt she will hit the notes—and only wonder if she will hit you. As my wife said, “She seemed so aggressive and dangerous I wanted to hide under my seat–and we were in the balcony!”
