Ambroise Thomas’ Mignon

I love Mignon—the opera, the book (Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Lehrjahr), and the movie (Falsche Bewegung by Wim Wenders & Peter Handke, the director and writer more famous for Wings of Desire and staring a very young Natasha Kinski as Mignon.) Not to mention the many songs by nearly every German composer from Schubert to Wolfgang Rihm.

Unfortunately it is hard to find a good recording of the opera. There a few good performances available, but the sound quality is not always great. I wish someone had recorded a well-engineered studio version with some great singers, but alas, it has not yet happened.
