Maria Ewing’s Salome

I remember this video made a big impression on me. I was particularly impressed with how bad Maria Ewing’s acting was. I found it absurd to the point of comedy. What was particularly strange was that if you turn off the video and just listen, it is a very good production. If I remember correctly her singing performance was one of my favorites for this role. But the whole effect is ruined if you watch her acting—hard not to laugh.

  1. The big attraction for many to this opera production is that she strips totally nude and then just stands holding a pose in full view of the audience for a full 15 seconds, way before the usual climatic ending of the dance music.

  2. I have absolutely no recollection of this at all. I must found her dancing so embarrassing that I could not bear to watch the entire thing. By this point of the opera I was doing more listening and less watching—the visuals were just so bad. This really would have been a much better release for CD only.
