Opera Quiz Date

Feb 14, 2006
On the Metropolitan Opera Quiz they asked which operatic character who you most want to go out on a date with. My choice was Béatrice from Berlioz’ Béatrice et Bénedict. Beatrice is one of the handful of great Shakespearian heroines, and the only one to make it intact into an opera. We are not talking about Juliettes, Desdamonas or Ophelias, mere children who get swept away by fate and men. Beatrice is one of the great Shakespeare women who are themselves a force of nature. She is by far the wittiest of Shakespeare’s women, perhaps of all his characters. She is great fun and unlike most women in opera she arrives, purposefully and inevitably, at a good ending.
