Bastien und Bastienne

One of my favorite Mozart arias comes from this early opera. It is No. 10 “Diggi, Daggi.” In this section, Colas conducts a magic ritual to help reunite Bastien with Bastienne. The music for the aria is in C minor and is very dark and sinister, but the lyrics are goofy mock-Latin nonsense. The effect is quite comical. My wife and I love to dance about the house singing this ridiculous song.

The opera itself is a parody of Le Devin du village by Rousseau, better known today as the author of Confessions and The Social Contract.
