Robert Wilson

Nov 2, 2005
I have seen the Knee Plays (starring David Byrne) from CIVIL warS and some of his film, video and television work. I have never seen any of Robert Wilson’s more recent opera productions. I have heard but not seen Hamletmachine. Perhaps the visual component is essential, as it is in most of Wilson’s work, because cannot think of anything even remotely sensible to say about this work. I find this one utterly incomprehensible.

I always thought of Einstein on the Beach as a Robert Wilson theatrical work. This is one opera where the “words” (there are not many, so perhaps story or better yet, concept) is more interesting and important than the music, which is pretty much superfluous. It is very similar to the kind of theater work he was doing at the time.

I have heard about but never had the chance to see some of his early theater work. The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin went on almost all day if I remember right and people would come and go throughout the performance. It was not expected that you would sit through the whole thing.
