Peter Grimes

I just can’t bring myself to really enjoy Benjamin Britten. I don’t really think there are many (any) Anglo-American composers who could write very well for the voice and even fewer who could extend that writing to full scale extended works like an opera or oratorio. Even fewer who could preserve some sort of dramatic interest and forward
motion in an extended work.

I cannot think of a single work in English that I would think of as great. And if I could think of one that I thought was good, I would probably change my mind about it in a month or two. This bias carries over into the realm of opera translation as well. Because I don’t like works written in English, I have trouble liking operas when they are translated into English as well. Too bad, because English is an excellent language for so many other things.
